The Growth of Curling Through Floor Curling: A Case Study of Curling Luxembourg
August 14, 2025On June 26th, 2025, history was made at the MAGIC Games in Pamplona, Spain, with the first-ever Mixed Ability Floor Curling Tournament, held as part of the broader International Mixed Ability Rugby Tournament festivities. A drop-in day on Wednesday, June 25th, welcomed rugby teams and curious community members to try out the sport for the first time, as many discovered the fun and inclusive nature of floor curling.

The tournament itself brought together 36 teams, including 2 from Canada, 7 from Ireland and 27 from Pamplona. For the majority of the teams, it was their first time playing and participating in a floor curling tournament. Despite that, the level of play was impressive, with many games being incredibly close and competitive, some even going to extra ends. Sportsmanship was another highlight of the event, with teams adhering to the rules of play and shaking hands with their opponents before and after each game. This truly showcased just how accessible and engaging floor curling can be for all.
In a standout moment, the top three teams were all from the Tasubinsa organization in Pamplona, where none of the team members had played floor curling before. Their enthusiasm and quick learning captured the spirit of what this sport is all about.

To help continue the momentum beyond the Games, equipment was donated to several local groups, including Tasubinsa, Downs Navarra, and the West Cork Jesters, who travelled from Ireland. These organizations now have the equipment they need to bring floor curling back to their communities and keep the spirit of inclusive sport alive.
From start to finish, it was a joyful and nail-biting event. Introducing a new sport, building cross-cultural friendships, and demonstrating that floor curling is truly for everyone.
